The Value of Being Coachable

Being coachable is invaluable today. It fosters growth, boosts performance, expands skill sets, and improves mindset and mental health.
But does that mean you should hire a coach right now? No. And before you scratch your head, hear me out—this is the wrong question to ask.
I’ve heard this question from many people, especially those navigating the “new normal” of remote work and trying to stay productive and connected. People want to be reliable and effective despite distractions, but hiring a coach isn’t always the answer.
While everyone is coachable, no one needs a coach.
- Coaching is a partnership—two equals working together.
- A coach isn’t there to fix you or tell you what to do.
- They’re not a therapist unraveling your past or a consultant delivering specific outcomes.
A coach’s role is based on the belief that their clients are smart, capable individuals ready to implement change and achieve specific outcomes. The key difference is that making changes is the coachee’s responsibility—not the coach’s. The partnership works when both desire and timing align.
Successful coaches work with people who are functioning well but want to move from "Good to Great" (to borrow Jim Collins’ phrase). These clients want to take ownership of their actions, examine their limiting beliefs, and make meaningful changes.
So yes, you are coachable—but the real question is:
Are You Ready for Coaching Now?
To evaluate if the timing is right, ask yourself these questions:
- Am I willing to do the work and let the coach coach?
- Can I “try on” new concepts and ways of doing things?
- Can I be completely honest with my coach?
- If I’m not getting what I need, will I share it and clarify what I want from the relationship?
- Am I ready to stop self-defeating behaviors that limit my success?
- Can I commit to being on time for all calls and appointments?
- Am I someone who can share credit for my success?
If you can answer “yes” to these, coaching could be right for you—but it still requires desire, drive, and good chemistry with your coach.
So, if you’re ready, the final question is: By whom?
Partnering with a great coach gives you a catalyst focused on helping you gain a competitive edge and achieve your goals.
